Back at the hotel again, Julia checked her email while Carly sent a message to her husband, Rob.

“What a surprise,” said Julia. “Here’s a short note from Josh. He says he’s thinking of me and hopes we’re enjoying Seattle. And he’s figuring out the subway system. He’s only gotten on the wrong train twice this week so far.” She chuckled. “I remember when we were headed the wrong direction one time, and some kind people told us how to go back the right way without having to pay a second fare.”

“Subways still scare me. I prefer to be able to look out a window and see where I’m going.”

“Me too.” Julia sent a quick note in response. She’d felt disappointed that he hadn’t joined her on this trip—worried, to be honest, whether it indicated a problem with their relationship. Hearing from him now made her smile.

“I’m worried that Lincoln could still be in danger,” she said when she was done.

“Not. Your. Problem.” Carly’s fingers flew as she composed her own, much longer, note.

“I know, but I worry about him. If Sheldon and his companions were able to track Lincoln down once, they could probably do it again.”

“He’ll be with his sister and probably will be safe enough,” said Carly. “Hopefully, they don’t have her contact information.”

“I wonder what kind of project Sheldon would be working on with the Chinese government. He clearly isn’t Chinese himself, and those other thugs didn’t look Asian.”

“Doesn’t it almost always boil down to money? I can think of a few headlines in the past that were all about making big money illegally.”

“I suppose that’s a possibility. I wonder if Beau knows this Sheldon guy. I’m going to call him.”

“And if he says he does?”

“For one thing, it’ll prove that he lied when he said he didn’t know any of the names on that list.”
